Dewi Irawan is the third daughter of actor couple Ade Irawan and the late Bambang Irawan (1932-1979). Out of Bambang Irawan’s five children, only two stepped into the film industry—Dewi and her younger sister Ria Irawan. Under the care of her father, Dewi has always been familiar with acting, having acquainted with it ever since she was in kindergarten. However, acting wasn’t the only thing that she was interested in; she was proficient in some traditional dances and also in sports, before she was then started to become known because of her role in Belai Kasih (1973).
Through Chaerul Umam’s 1982 film Titian Serambut Dibelah Tujuh, Dewi earned an FFI (Indonesian Film Festival) Best Lead Actress nomination in 1983. Yet it was her role in Sang Penari 28 years later that got her the trophy, this time in the Supporting Actress category.
